Caen Memorial – a trip through the past
While the purpose of the museum is to promote peace, doing so by presenting the horrors of war in picture and film, it is also an excellent place to learn about the causes and effects of the Second World War.
The World War II museum in Caen is a real eye opener regarding the cruel reality of war. The museum presents an excellent 1/2 hour movie as an overview of the Normandy invasion, and an interesting exhibit which takes an intimate look at the participants from both sides. You can gain a better understanding of the chain of events leading up to the invasion, and with an emphasis on the "failure of peace".
The Memorial covers more than the Battle of Normandy, although this is the most important part of the war, beside the atomic bombs. There is also a focus on France’s involvement and the catastrophic effect that the occupation and invasion had on its people. There are many powerful photographs and memorabilia throughout the exhibits.
